Fort De Soto

Rancho Fishing Communities

Fort Desoto holds stories of vibrant fishing “rancho” Creole communities, who persisted in sustainable fishery trade between Florida and the Caribbean during the periods of Spanish and British influence. These communities were destroyed during the United States military campaigns of the Second Seminole War from 1835 to 1842.

3ft of Sea-Level Rise

An estimated that a one-meter rise in sea level will result in the loss of over 13,000 recorded archaeological sites in Florida alone, and an untold number that are currently unrecorded.
